The dedication of LOROS extends beyond patient care, as they are committed to research and education, working in partnership with higher and further education providers to improve the understanding and practice of palliative care. Their efforts are crucial in enhancing the quality of life for those with terminal illnesses, enabling them to live and die with dignity and respect. LOROS's vision is that everyone with an incurable illness has the right to excellent care, valuing their uniqueness and choices.
By raising money for LOROS, we aim to support their mission and ensure that they can continue to provide these essential services to our community. Our connection to LOROS drives our passion for this cause, and we believe that together, we can make a significant impact. Whether it's through volunteering, fundraising, or simply spreading awareness, every effort counts. Let's join forces to support LOROS and create a legacy of compassionate care for future generations.
Ian is thankful for the work of the charity as his Mum spent time at LOROS at the end of her life.
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that affects the motor neurones—specialist nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord responsible for controlling muscle movement. As these cells deteriorate and die, individuals gradually lose the ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. Early symptoms may include muscle weakness, cramps, twitching, and difficulty gripping or climbing stairs. Over time, these symptoms worsen, leading to increasing paralysis, communication challenges, and respiratory failure.
The exact cause of MND remains unclear, but research suggests a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors may contribute. Around 10% of cases are inherited, often linked to specific gene mutations, while the remaining cases appear sporadically without a clear family history. Scientists have identified abnormalities in protein processing, cellular messaging, and chemical imbalances—such as excess glutamate—that may damage motor neurones and trigger the disease. Despite its severity, ongoing research and support from charities like My Name’5 Doddie Foundation are driving progress toward better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
My Name’5 Doddie Foundation is a beacon of hope and determination in the fight against Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Founded by Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir, who faced his diagnosis with extraordinary courage and infectious humour, the charity is dedicated to funding vital research and providing practical support to those affected by MND. Since its launch in 2017, the foundation has committed millions of pounds to pioneering scientific studies, accelerating the search for effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure. It also offers grants to help individuals and families navigate the daily challenges of living with MND—whether through mobility aids, home adaptations, or respite care.
With its bold tartan branding and unwavering spirit, the foundation inspires communities across the UK and beyond to rally together—whether through fundraising events, awareness campaigns, or sporting challenges like the Doddie Aid fitness movement. It champions collaboration, working closely with researchers, clinicians, and other charities to amplify impact and ensure that no one faces MND alone. Every donation helps drive progress toward a world free of MND, honouring Doddie’s legacy with action, compassion, and relentless optimism. His voice lives on in every mile cycled, every pound raised, and every life touched by the foundation’s mission.
The Rivers Trust works tirelessly to protect and restore our precious waterways. They are the umbrella organization for 65 member Rivers Trusts across Britain, Northern Ireland, and Ireland, bringing together a wealth of data and expertise to tackle the challenges our rivers face. Their efforts are crucial, as healthy rivers are essential to human life, providing us with drinking water, supporting agriculture, and offering recreational spaces for our health and wellbeing2. Sadly, 0% of rivers in England and Northern Ireland are currently classed as 'good overall,' highlighting the urgent need for action.
The Rivers Trust addresses a wide range of issues, from raw sewage discharge to the decline in freshwater species, which has seen an 83% drop globally since 1970. They also focus on removing artificial barriers that obstruct migrating fish, with 99% of British rivers affected by such barriers2. By supporting The Rivers Trust, we can contribute to their vital work and help ensure that our rivers remain vibrant and healthy for generations to come.
Together, we can make a difference. Whether it's through hands-on river clean-ups or supporting their initiatives from afar, every effort counts. Let's join forces to protect our rivers and create a legacy of clean, thriving waterways for the future
